Learn Travel Hacks for Free this Saturday

Award-winning travel writer, Teresa Bergen, taught yoga at West Coast Fitness for 13 years. She's been part of this community for a long time, and this Saturday she's coming back to talk about three things she knows a lot about: sobriety, travel, and yoga.

Her work has appeared in Travel + Leisure, USA Today, Saturday Evening Post, and Willamette Week, among others. She's a member of the Society of American Travel Writers. She's written books — Sober Travel Handbook: Navigating the World Alcohol-Free, Sober Yoga, Easy Portland Outdoors, Transcribing Oral History, and Historic Cemeteries of Portland, Oregon. She's a certified yoga teacher and personal trainer who's taught in gyms and studios across Portland and occasionally guest teaches while traveling abroad.

She's also been sober for decades.

Her book Sober Travel Handbook covers everything from navigating wine country without drinking to surviving booze-heavy work events to what to do if you accidentally drink alcohol on the road. It includes chapters on sober cruises, nondrinking guesthouses, and a list of 40 things to do on a trip other than drink. It's practical, funny, and written by someone who's actually lived it — not someone theorizing from behind a desk.

Her zine Sober Yoga explores how yoga philosophy — specifically the yamas and niyamas, the ethical dos and don'ts of yoga — connects to recovery. If you've ever sat through a yoga class and wondered what all the Sanskrit words had to do with your actual life, this is the talk where that clicks.

This isn't just for people in recovery

Teresa's work speaks to anyone who's ever felt weird turning down a drink at a dinner party, anyone who's traveled with someone in recovery and wanted to be supportive, anyone who's sober-curious, anyone who doesn't drink for religious or health reasons, and anyone who's just interested in hearing a great writer talk about how she's navigated the world differently.

It's also for people who love yoga and want to understand the philosophy behind the poses they've been doing for years.
