He's 80% Brawn and 20% Theatrics

At sixteen, Steve Bradley — well, the man who would eventually become Steve Bradley — was asked to join his high school wrestling team, and he turned it down flat. Not because of the headlocks or the singlets or the getting-slammed-onto-a-mat of it all. He said no because wrestling meant weigh-ins and he was a teenager with a metabolism that let him inhale entire pizzas without consequence. Giving that up to go count ounces? Absolutely not. He had baseball, soccer, football, and track — sports that let a man eat in peace.

Fast forward to now: he weighs his food on purpose, tracks his macros with precision, is deliberately trying to get bigger, and recently unlocked visible abs for the first time in his life.

So how does a person end up here?

The way many great decisions start: some friends were watching wrestling on TV, invited him over, and he thought it looked cool. That's usually where it ends: you think something looks cool, you feel a flicker of inspiration, and then you go make a sandwich and never think about it again. Steve instead went home, googled "wrestling school Oregon," found Oregon Pro Wrestling, and showed up. He loved it so much that when he later hit a real fork in the road — go back to school, or go all in on wrestling — he chose the path with more spandex.

The appeal, for him, isn't only the athleticism, though it's a brutally athletic thing to do. It's that wrestling is theater where the punches land — a live drama where the audience gives you instant feedback. "It's exhilarating being out in front of fans," he says, "whether they love you or hate you." Both count. Both mean you did your job. He's taken that energy everywhere from Eugene to Philadelphia, and the adrenaline still hits every time.

The West Coast Fitness glow up

Here's the part the rest of us can actually use. Before wrestling, Steve was one of those people who went to the gym with real commitment and no plan — showing up, doing whatever felt vaguely productive, hoping for the best. He got into rock climbing too, which he approaches like there's a saber-tooth tiger at the bottom of the wall and reaching the top is the only way to avoid a toothy death. Motivating, if not exactly technical 😉

What actually changed things wasn't willpower, it was the room he walked into. Wrestling surrounded him with people who took their training seriously, and that pulled his own standards up by proximity. He eventually got a personal trainer— who happens to be a pro wrestler up in Canada, naturally — to steer his nutrition and programming, and that's when years of aimless effort finally started pointing somewhere. Same guy, same hours in the gym, wildly different results, all because someone gave the work a direction.

As for how he found West Coast Fitness: he moved to Portland in 2021, it was a few blocks away, a great price, a great gym, easy. Done. Sometimes it's as simple as that 🙂

Come watch him get thrown around on purpose

DOA Pro Wrestling brings "Where Eagles Dare" to the North Portland Eagles Lodge (7611 N. Exeter Ave) on Wednesday, August 12th, 7pm bell — roughly a ten-minute drive from the front desk. DOA's been running Northwest shows since 2008 and stacks its cards with local talent, including WCF's own trainer Amira, billed as The Tower of Power, who Steve casually mentions used to be his roommate which sounds like a whole season of prestige television that'll never get aired 🙃

Tickets are $20 general or $30 VIP first row (early meet-and-greet plus a poster) at doaprowrestling.com.

And if your mental image of live wrestling is some rowdy thing you wouldn't bring people to, Steve would genuinely love to change your mind, because the reality is a lot warmer than the reputation — it's family friendly, it's inclusive, it's a welcoming room, and in his own words, it's not just for rednecks. The crowd gets loud, the show is an absolute blast, and watching someone you've spotted at the squat rack launch a grown man clear across a ring might be the best twenty bucks in North Portland that night.

Cheering you on from ringside,
Your West Coast Fitness Family
